February 2018 Bookclub News

Julie's depiction of upcoming title selection a la Anne Rice

Dear Bookclub,
So sad to  miss any bookclub with the camaraderie, discussion and treats. I knew that this meeting would have Julie's fine teacherly-touch for Margaret Atwood's "The Handmaid's Tale", and I was even sadder. Julie reported there was a long discussion about the book, prompted by question strips. Those in attendance were rewarded with apple-blueberry crisp and gelato(!).  In trying to imagine the evening so I could write this blog, I found this scholarly chart to ponder(from Shmoop University) while drinking tea after eating two large cookies. 'Tis not the same!

Aside- check out Shmoop University (Diane, have you heard of them?):

Back to business - Julie's suggestions for an upcoming read:

"Before We Were Yours" Lisa Wingate *chosen
"Little Fires Eveywhere" Celeste Ng
"We Were the Lucky Ones" Georgia Hunter

Up next:
Charmaine Craig's "Miss Burma"

Happy Reading!

January 2018 Recap

Dear Bookclub,
Sue's interpretation of  Paulette Jiles' "The News of the World" included a trip to the bank for rolls of dimes, helping herself to nearly a dozen current San Diego Readers from a stack at some store entrance, delicious white bean chili, and birthday cake(honoring Lynne!). The clever table spread, with "What the Babysitter Saw in the Garage" adorning each place setting, prompted a continued discussion of the adventures of Captain Kidd and Johanna.

With so many options for an upcoming read, Sue's suggestions had us in a voting frenzy:

Chosen!

Up next: Margaret Atwood's "The Handmaid's Tale".

Happy reading,
LK
