December 2022/January 2023 Bookclub News

Blessed animals

Dear Bookclub,

December's holiday celebration at Chuck and Diane's, festive and blissfully over the top, shot us through and through with the spirit of the season. Pockets of discussion of Susan Orleans' "On Animals" popped up as did tableaus of a pigeon, a chicken, a dog, a tiger, a whale, a dog, a mule, a panda, an ox, and a lion. Did you notice?

I know we have moved on - a lot! - since it is now February, but if you'd like a bit more, here is another good read about the author and her storytelling strategies from the Los Angeles Review of Books:

Our group collected books for Pomerado Elementary School's library, thanks to Diane's efforts in finding a worthy recipient of our holiday literary giving.

Our books...

Discussed next at the January meeting, so graciously hosted by Kate:

I was not able to attend. Kate has also graciously provided an account of the evening:

"We had a lengthy discussion about a lot of aspects of the book: cast of characters and their disparate life circumstances, the plot both violent and reflective, the setting of the 1940’s, the setting of an African safari, etc. It was a unanimous conclusion that this book was a departure from the author’s usual focused style and, in general, not as remarkable, but still enjoyable.

A lot of time was spent discussing amazing safari experiences. Those of us who have been on safaris couldn’t have been more encouraging for others to do the same."

Kate's selections for an upcoming read:

"Tomorrow, and Tomorrow, and Tomorrow" Gabrielle Zevin

"The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo"  Taylor Jenkins Reid  *chosen

"The Heart's Invisible Furies" John Boyne

Happy reading in 2023!
